Recently, whilst having to hard reset my Sony-Ericsson mobile phone - a w850i in fact - I have to quickly find a way to backup my sim and mobile contacts to my Apple, Mac OSX based machine to safeguard against their loss during the full restore.
The solution I came up with to do the backup was to use a piece of software developed by a Salling Software. The software in question is called MobileSync and is designed specifically for Sony-Ericsson phones to synchronize with Microsoft Entourage.
The process of getting started, beyond downloading a copy of MobileSync and buying a serial number, is actually pretty simple, more so if you already have used and therefore setup the bluetooth file transfer application built into Mac OSX. If so, you are already one step ahead of the game.
Once installed, startup MobileSync and you will be presented with the connection window. Select the type of connection you wish to make to the phone, in this instance bluetooth with the correct previously setup Bluetooth Device, and then simply switch on or off the choice of phone "Contacts" or "Calendar" and the respective categories, and you are pretty much ready to rock and roll.
Needless to say, once the synchronize settings are all checked and set appropriately, just click the highlighted "Synchronize" button in the top right hand corner of the connections window. This will bring the synchronization progress window to the fore and provide you with the necessary detail on the synchronization process.
Of course the synchronization is a bi-directional process. That is to say that MobileSync will both send and receive contacts to and from the Sony-Ericsson phone. so that any contacts on the phone and not in your Entourage address book and contact list will be transfered over to the Mac, and those in the Entourage address book, but not ont he phone will be transfered to the phone itself.
All in all the process is a very easy and simple one and one that can be accomlished in all but a few clicks. The application is transparent about what it is doing at all times and should you decide that you have made an error in the synchronization process you can
easily stop it and start again, as the synchronization does not actually occur until the end of the process and you have been able to OKAY the procedure based on statistics it provides you.
These statistics are provided in the resonciliation window, prompting you to review the sync data of pending changes, of what is being added, removed and modified both in Entourage and on the Sony-Ericsson phone. It clearly provides a simple option to cancel an that any changes that are forecast wil be applied. You also have the option to not reviw such changes at the next synching process, though this of course might not be the wisest move.
Ultimately, MobileSync is just another great piece of software made by Salling Software and that it sits very nicely and very usefully amongst a cluster of applications for utilizing Sony-Ericsson phones with your Apple Macintosh computer.
On more than one occassion where Apple's iSync has not been upto scratch, MobileSync has stepped in and performed perfectly each time. I would give the software a 9/10 rating, because really it performs perfectly in every way, and I only hesitate to not give it a 10/10 simply because my phone and my contact list are not the centre of my universe.
Definitely look to find out more about MobileSync by visiting the Salling Software site, and the MobileSync page specifically.
